IBM Research Activities at TREC

چکیده
Several groups in IBM’s Research Division have participated in TREC, with differing goals. This chapter summarizes some of their activities and the conclusions they reached. It should be emphasized that there was no central plan in these activities – individual groups decided to participate in the way that made sense to them at the time. In effect, participation in TREC was a tool they used to further their diverse research agendas. In some cases, groups participated once or twice in order to explore some issue; in other cases, regular participation in certain TREC tracks has been a central component of a group’s research agenda. In this chapter we will first describe IBM Research’s participation in the TREC tracks most relevant to the classic document retrieval task, and in the tracks related to user interfaces for search and crosslanguage document retrieval. Then we will outline the extensive series of submissions made to the Question Answering track, and finally discuss IBM Research’s activities in multimedia retrieval at TREC.

IBM Research and the University of Colorado - TREC 2003 Genomics Track
IBM Research and the University of Colorado collaborated on their submission to the inaugural Genomics track at TREC 2003. IBM Research has extensive experience in natural language processing, text analysis, and large-scale systems [1-6]. IBM also has numerous research and business activities in the broad areas of bioinformatics and bio-medical information processing [7, 8]. IBM Research is cur...
متن کاملIBM SpamGuru on the TREC 2005 Spam Track
IBM Research is developing an enterpriseclass anti-spam filter as part of our overall strategy of attacking the Spam problem on multiple fronts. Our anti-spam filter, SpamGuru, mirrors this philosophy by incorporating several different filtering technologies and intelligently combining their output to produce a single spamminess rating. The use of multiple algorithms improves the system’s effec...
متن کاملIBM at TREC 2012: Microblog Track
This paper describes IBM Research’s approach to the real-time ad-hoc retrieval task of the TREC 2012 Microblog Track. As this was our first time participating in the Microblog Track, our primary goal was to build a strong baseline system on which to later improve. In particular, our system implements a Learning-to-Rank framework on top of a full-dependence Markov Random Field (MRF) retrieval mo...
متن کاملJuru at TREC 10 - Experiments with Index Pruning
This is the first year that Juru, a Java IR system developed over the past few years at the IBM Research Lab in Haifa, participated in TREC’s Web track. Our experiments focused on the ad-hoc tasks. The main goal of our experiments was to validate a novel pruning method, first presented at [1], that significantly reduces the size of the index with very little influence on the system’s precision....
متن کاملIBM Research TREC 2002 Video Retrieval System
In this paper, we describe the IBM Research system for analysis, indexing, and retrieval of video, which was applied to the TREC-2002 video retrieval benchmark. The system explores methods for fully-automatic content analysis, shot boundary detection, multi-modal feature extraction, statistical modeling for semantic concept detection, and speech recognition and indexing. The system supports que...
